The most important reason people engage in on the Web is that it is profitable.
The whole idea of niche marketing is to find out where there is a specific need and fill it. The days when a person can begin their Internet marketing career by promoting generic solutions is almost over. Major marketers already have well established websites that are extremely difficult to dislodge from their top spots on the search engines.
The solution for enterprising Internet marketers wanting to make money is concentrating on niche marketing. And, this involves finding out what people want and connecting them to products that could help them. In this way, you slip right past the big guys with their malls and department stores. By finding a specific need and filling it you may have a niche with little or no competition.
While it's great to start up a website dedicated to, say, dog training, you've got to realize that there are already a ton of well established sites. You would need to do a lot of content building, optimization and link building to get your site ranked anywhere near the top ten. And, even if you did get a top ten ranking in Google, you;d have to keep on your toes and work hard to keep that ranking.
On the other hand, you could do some research on specific problems dog owners have with their dogs. What about helping Cocker Spaniel owners who want to stop their dog from barking during the night? Is that a niche that could be profitable?
So, the first step in is to locate a profitable niche. There are some well established criteria you want to look for to find a profitable niche.
The first thing you need to find are keyword phrases used in searches. Your initial target is to find phrases that are used around 1000 times per month. This indicates that there is enough interest in that phrase to make it profitable, but probably not enough interest to attract the attention of the already established major players in the market.
For example, while the phrase "barking dog" is searched over 300,000 times a month, that phrase “barking dog cd” is searched only 880 times a month.
If you spend a few minutes you'll be able to find lots more of these potential niches.
For each of these potential niches, you'll need to determine the level of competition in that niche. Are there a lot of sites that have been optimized for that keyword phrase? Do those sites have a lot of backlinks pointing to them from other sites? The answers to these questions will tell you the level of competition in that niche and let you know how much work would be involved in breaking into that niche.
Next you have to find a product to sell. Are there products that have affiliate programs you can use to make money from promoting, say, a barking dog CD?
Once you have a keyword phrase with moderate search volume, have determined that the level of competition is low, and have a product to promote, you're ready for niche marking.
